Project Statement
-
For the first mega shopping mall in a suburban town in the northern mountainous
region of Thailand, we sought to define a landscape that could engage local people
by evoking a sense of belonging. The result is a “Cultural Plaza”, which embraces
-
the native culture, ecology, and identity of “Chiang Rai” through unique spatial
formations coupled with holistic detailing of various landscape components, such
as the benches, steps, paving pattern, lighting, and planting plan.
-
Project Background
-
The shopping mall is becoming a prerequisite for upcoming towns around
Thailand. It is undeniable that the mall is an important urban space but often, the
exterior space is dominated by parking and has a utilitarian look that can alienate
users. For this project, the landscape architecture plays an important role in
delivering a space that satisfies the functional requirements of the mall, while at the
same time creating a memorable urban experience under a limited budget. For
Chiang Rai, the scale of this mega mall seems majestic and could easily become
-
overwhelming. Therefore, the street frontage is designed as a transitional space for
visitors at ground level and helps to mitigate the visual impact of the project when
viewed from afar.
-
Mountain-scape
-
The landscape design encapsulates the mountainous scenery of Chiang Rai into
an illustrious sculptural space. A unique pattern of contour lines representing the
local mountainous territory is both the inspiration and the overall theme in the design,
from the scale of the site through to the landscape detailing......
